PHARM STUDY GUIDES
MODULE 1

Pharmacology Quiz 1:

1. Why do we categorize medications into classifications?
Drug classifications organize drugs into categories. There are three main methods of
drug classifications:

1. Chemical makeup
2. Effects
3. Legal definition

At the same time, some drugs are grouped under one drug classification. But, the drugs
may not be together under another classification.
At the same time, a drug can be in multiple classes within the same classification. The
purpose of drug classification is to ensure drug use is safe and beneficial.
A drug may be classified by the chemical type of the active ingredient or by the way it is
used to treat a particular condition.
2. What is a prototype?

A prototype is known as the lead agent in a drug class.

3. Compare and Contrast Generic and Brand Trade Name:
Generic: Nonproprietary name and are less complex than chemical names. Official
name, not capitalized, cheaper!
Brand: proprietary or trade names, are the names under which a drug is marketed.

4. What is the difference between a capsule and a tablet?
Tablets-longer shelf life, contain higher doses of active ingredients, slower acting,
disintegrate unevenly in body, can be scored, cheaper in cost.
Capsules-act quickly, all drugs are absorbed, cannot be scored or split, reduced GI
irritation, more expensive.

5. Your patient is receiving a new medication for asthma. The student nurse asks
you why each of the following positive (GOOD) characteristics and properties are
important to consider with the administration of this medication.

Effectiveness: elicits the responses for which it is given. Effectiveness is the most
important property a drug can have.

Safety: One that cannot produce harmful effects. The chances of producing harmful
effects can be reduced by proper drug selection and proper dosing.

Selectivity: A selective drug is defined as one that elicits only the response for which it
is given. There is no such thing as a wholly selective drug because all drugs cause side
effects.
