, Poverty and Tropical Disease
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 is a worldwide call to action to end poverty,
safeguard the environment, and promote peace and prosperity for everyone by 2030 (United
Nations, 2015). More than 800 million people worldwide still live on less than $1.90 a day, many
without enough food, clean water, or sanitation. SDG 3.3 calls for the eradication of neglected
tropical illnesses and other infectious diseases by 2030 (United Nations, 2015).
Compare and contrast the most appropriate relevant and current data on prevalence and
trend of the Schistosomiasis (tropical disease) in Benin and Indonesia
Tropical diseases continue to threaten global health. Schistosoma demands severe treatment.
Schistosomiasis treatment has improved (Verjee, 2020). Lack of information and awareness, as
well as uncontrolled parasites and vectors, remain major obstacles to global schistosomiasis
eradication (Verjee, 2020). Still, Indonesia in Southeast Asia, and Benin, in West Africa, still
endure.
Schistosomiasis, often known as bilharzia, is a tropical parasite disease that causes major
morbidity and mortality in both countries (Verjee, 2020). The most recent data and trend
prevalence on the disease in the Benin Republic emerged from a national mapping of human
schistosomiasis conducted to provide the baseline epidemiological data needed to implement the
national schistosomiasis control and elimination strategy in order to meet the WHO's goal of
reaching at least 75 percent of school-age children in endemic areas by 2020 (Onzo-Aboki et al.,
2019).
In contrast, most current and relevant information on the prevalence and progress of
schistosomiasis in the Republic of Indonesia is limited to a specific location or portion of the
nation. Between 1982 and 2005, the Lindu and Napu Valleys were the most affected by
schistosomiasis (Satrija et al., 2015). In the Napu Valley, it was 1%, whereas in the Lindu
Valley, it was 0.6 percent. (Anastasia & Widjaja, 2019), compared to its widespread in 76/77
districts in the Benin Republic, with a nationwide prevalence of 19.78 percent (Onzo-Aboki et
al., 2019).
