SJD 1501 ASSIGNMENT 4 SEMESTER 1 ASSIGNMENT 4
Assignment 4 Discussion forum
This assignment is linked with activity 4.1 on the criminal justice system and the public. Under "Additional Resources" there are two documents on Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) as well as a document called "Crime Against Women Report 2018". Together with the links below, they provide more information on the extent of IPV not only in South Africa but worldwide. There are shocking statistics on the abuse of women. In this assignment you will have to look at the issue of IPV and how each component of the criminal justice system can contribute towards dealing with this societal challenge.

1. In light of the current issue of IPV and crimes against women, briefly discuss what the implications will be for the police, the courts and correctional services. (8 marks)
2. Related to the abovementioned aspect, you also learned about victimology. List the different kinds of victims and briefly explain what secondary victimization mean. (5 marks)
3. Name the two main Acts of legislation applicable when dealing with domestic violence and intimidation. (2 marks) TOTAL: 15 MARKS Answers 1.
The police, being the frontline social institution to deal with incidents of domestic violence, have a
vital role in assisting victims of domestic abuse to follow through on their decision to seek recourse for the abuse (Corcoran, Stephenson, Perryman & Allen, 2001; Glanz & Spiegel, 1996).
The police not only represent state policy but also act as an important link to both the prosecution
process and to the provision of services to victims in a community. Thus, as "gatekeepers" to the criminal justice system, the South African Police Service (SAPS) plays an important role in shaping victims' initial experiences of it. Although for many victims of domestic violence, the police might be a last resort it is often the first point of contact when the victim decides to take that first bold step towards seeking redress
The court system is a central part of the societal response to intimate partner violence (IPV), and is a frequently used source of help for victims. The concept of therapeutic jurisprudence suggests
that the court should be evaluated not just for its potential effect on recidivism, but for its impact on the well-being of all those who participate in it, and IPV scholars suggest that empowerment is
a key component of any therapeutic intervention for victims. Research in these areas is limited by
the lack of a standard method for examining victim experience in the court system. This article describes the development and piloting of a 23-item measure designed to address this gap. The pilot sample included 157 victims of IPV seeking civil protection orders (CPOs). Exploratory
