Chloe, an 8-year-old African American female has been brought to counseling by her
foster mother (Walden, 2017). Chloe was placed in foster care after an investigation by the
Department of Human Services resulted in the termination of her biological mother’s parental
rights due to evidences supporting reports of physical and sexual abuse. Her foster mother,
Elaine, describes Chloe as a highly sensitive child that demonstrates distress when away from
her and withdraws from interpersonal interaction with unknown adults (Walden, 2017). Chloe’s
teachers are concerned that her isolation from her peers and refusal of participation in activities
during the first 30 minutes of drop off is impacting her academic, social and emotional
development.
Chloe meets the diagnostic criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (5th ed.; DSM–5;
American Psychiatric Association, 2013). As a result of past traumatic events, she shows distress
when away from her foster mother because it symbolizes the experience she went through when
living with her biological mother. She demonstrates lack of interest to participate in activities at
school, and detachment from her peers, impacting her social development. She is showing self-
destructive behavior by biting her nails until she bleeds. This behavior happens most as a result
of the distress of being dropped off at school, daycare or swim class.
Chloe would benefit on Adlerian’s play therapy to work on her post-traumatic stress
disorder that stems from her life with her biological mother. Adlerian’s play therapy is utilized
by the counselor to assist the child to investigate mistaken benefits and establish a sense of
belonging (Dufrene, Henderson & Eckart,2016). Chloe’s traumatic experience has resulted in her
