Labor Unions
Labor unions are essential for workers' welfare and protect their needs and rights through
collective bargaining. Workers' status and working conditions are essential, and the labor union
comes in place to ensure that their rights are considered by their employers. From the video,
workers are protesting against their right to work and be protected by the labor unions and not be
forced to become members (PBS NewHour, 2012). The Taft-Hartley Act protects every
employee and advocates for their freedom of choice regarding being a union member (Freidin,
2017). Therefore, the unions should protect both their members and the non-members.
Considering the unions have initiation fees and dues, it is at the liberty of the employees
to choose to join or not. The unions are also supposed to be mindful of the treatment offered to
their members and the non-members. They should adhere to the provisions of the Taft-Hartley
Act and protect every employer and employee fairly. Therefore, I stand with the union's
existence and believe it is operating for the good of the employees and the employers. Workers
are better off under the labor unions' umbrella than their personal advocate for their rights; the
union projects their voices and protects them.
As a business owner, I believe labor unions are there for the good of employers and
employees. Apart from the unions that contract with their union members and prevent the firing
of incompetent and abusive employees, the other unions are beneficial. The unions help set
industry standards for salaries and benefits that factor in all the welfare of union and nonunion
members. The role makes it easy for employers to account for the salaries of their employees.
