What Do Operations Mangers Do?
Operations managers fill a pivotal role in a business, government, or other organization.
The exact tasks of an operations manager depend in large part on the size and scope of the
company or organization. To be successful, the manger is going to need to posses a wide range of
business and interpersonal skills. Some of the duties that operations managers perform include
improving the operational systems, processes, and policies in support of the organization’s
overall mission. They also play a significant role in long-term planning, including initiatives
geared towards operational excellence. They can also find themselves involved in the developing
individual program budgets along with finding ways to increase the effectiveness and efficiency
of support services. In general, they monitor existing processes and analyze their effectiveness,
oversee quality assurance, head training of other employees, and are directly involved in the
hiring and firing process.
Two areas that interest me the most are technology solutions and employee training. The
technology piece because I am an IT by trade and have been since the early 2000’s. I’ve always
been fascinated by technology and the role it can play in not only improving business operations
but our every day live. As we move further into the technology age, I understand the thing that is
going drive business profitability more than anything is going to be automation. Now we don’t
have to hire more team members to perform certain task, instead we can save time and money by
utilizing technology to farm out many of the tasks that required hiring more personnel. And still
with technology being more prevalent people will still always be your most important asset.
