Leadership of Reduction in Workforce


Experience: Post a summary of your final paper: Planning Change: Reduction in Workforce. The summary
should include the highlights (include key points from each heading) of the paper and should be confined
to two paragraphs.

Any type of change in a healthcare system must be thought out, planned, researched and
structured. Managers must utilize several factors in deciding who is most valuable to the organization
and who will incorporate the values, mission and goals of the organization when implementing a RIF. It is
essential for managers to use transparent and therapeutic communication as well as sensitivity at this
time, as this can be detrimental to those affected.

In the implementation of this change, the organization will follow the Kotter’s change model.
This is an 8-step change model that will be utilized over a six-month timeframe. This model will benefit
this change as it focuses on the preparation and acceptance of change, as well as the transition of steps
in-between. Utilizing this model will help to have a specific plan to implement the RIF and allow
management to follow necessary steps in doing so.

Reflection: Reflect on your experience in researching the issue of reduction in workforce and what it was
like to apply what you learned to the scenario. What did you wonder about as you made decisions on
who would not be working soon? Were you able to reconcile internal conflict of values with the actions
you had to take? What were your frustrations or obstacles? Are you confident in your decisions?

In researching and writing this paper, I writer learned a wealth of knowledge related to a
reduction in the workplace. Any healthcare system must run as a business and meet the financial budget
in order to remain successful. In doing so, management may need to make the necessary cuts to make
this possible. I learned that is must be done in the fairest and ethical matter as possible; personal
opinions are unable to weigh in and there are no individual favors done to keep those that do not meet
the needs and goals of the organization.

Additionally, with the cuts made, the existing employees will have a lot more responsibility to
make up for those that are now gone. This can be a lot on the stress of those individuals, therefore, the
appropriate amount of support needs to be provided. Also, the employees who were not eliminated may
have plenty of mixed feelings related to the company and a sense of trust will be gone. These individuals
need to have adequate support and reassurance related to their jobs.

Implications: How does this experience and what you learned from your reflection on it inform your
future actions in advanced practice in nursing leadership?

This assignment has taught me a variety of information related to leadership. This has shown
that things need to be done in a thorough and controlled process, not just based on emotions or ideas.
Specifically, in a RIF, there needs to be rationale to support decision making as well as addressing and
ethical issues as well. Supporting staff and providing adequate communication is key to being a strong
and respected leader.
