Keeping up the standards

Cooling curve of stearic acid and of paraffin wax

Introduction: Calorimetry is used in chemical reaction and it is used as the
measuring method of biochemical reactions. The advantage of calorimetry is
that it does not need complicated equipment, and it can measure small
energy changes. Calorimetry can be used in life science, clinical medicine,
pharmacology, biotechnology, ecology, environmental science, and other
areas.
In this experiment the calorimeter technique was used to find the cooling
curve of a solid substance. Calorimetry is the process of measuring the
amount of heat released or absorbed during a chemical reaction. A calorimeter
is a glass beaker that was used with the thermometer for measuring the
temperature during the experiment.
Stearic acid is a substance used in cosmetics and hygiene products. Stearic
acid is extracted from animal fats or vegetables and its referred to as fatty
acid.
Paraffin wax is a colourless hard wax and it can be found in petroleum. It can be
used to make candles, wax paper, etc.

Hypothesis: Which one (stearic acid or paraffin wax) will solidify quicker.

Keywords:
Hazard – something which has the potential to cause harm.
Risk – the harm that could be cause by a hazard.

Calibration of a thermometer
Before beginning the investigations, we made sure that the
thermometers were properly calibrated so that the results were as
accurate as possible. Calibration is the process of adjusting and
checking the accuracy of the thermometer. To show that the
measurements were taken in the same conditions for obtaining the
same results, calibration was checked four times. In this experiment a
liquid (spirit) thermometer was used to record the temperature
changes.
