Adolescents are defined as people age 13- 19 years old (Falkner, 2018). This is a

monumental time in one’s life. Multiple different changes are occurring creating different stress

and issues for those of this age group. From body image changes, to new relationships, from

school stress to peer pressure, adolescent’s experience different stresses than other age groups

and it can be overwhelming. One contemporary issue that is unique to adolescents is

cyberbullying and it can have many effects on adolescents. This paper is going to discuss the

cyberbullying, its effects, and resources available to adolescents.

Cyberbullying, defined as bullying that occurs online, is a newer issue for adolescents

(Falkner, 2018). One reason for this is now a large portion of adolescents have multiple social

media accounts. These multiple accounts give bullies a larger chance of reaching the person.

They can comment hurtful things, message the account holder, share images tagging the

individual they are bullying, or even stalk their victim online. There have even been court cases

due to cyberbullying. Cyberbullying differs from bullying face- to- face by “permanence,

publicity, and permeability of messaging.” (Fahy et al., 2016). This is also becoming a larger

issue due to lack of adult supervision or interruption from to being online. The effects of

cyberbullying can be just as detrimental as regular bullying if not more so to an adolescent.

Adolescents are focused on what peers think of them and fitting in. When one is

cyberbullied, it can spread very quickly as it is public, difficult to take down, and can been seen

by multiple people at the school or in the adolescent’s group. There have been studies done

displaying that 20-40% of teens have experienced cyberbullying during their adolescent years

(Bottino et al., 2015). This can cause social issues, depression, increased stress, behavioral

issues, anger, and anxiety (Fahy et al., 2016). Cyberbullying can also be linked to substance
