These eight weeks have gone so fast, and I can genuinely say that I have gained a lot of
knowledge and understanding of epidemiological and statistical concepts. The materials and
methods used in this course serve as a framework as we work towards becoming advanced
practice nurses. Students in this course learn how to integrate epidemiological and statistical
concepts that serve as a basis for healthcare interventions. As clearly stated in the course
overview, “epidemiology is an important tool in the Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) arsenal
for providing effective and fiscally responsible healthcare to individuals and populations.” On
that note, this course has given me the necessary tools and knowledge to meet the MSN Essential
II and NP Core Competencies #2. The week six assignment where I had to research a health
problem in my community and address the cause of the problem, come up with interventions and
prevention, and my role in managing the health problem (Chamberlain University, 2018). I
completed my health problem on adult obesity and came up with specific ways in which I can
make a difference in preventing and managing this health problem as a family nurse practitioner
in my community.
This course has given me the ability to read a scientific paper efficiently while retrieving the
most important information is crucial for practitioners and by so doing, I have been able to meet
the MSN program outcome #4. A family nurse practitioner in a primary care setting has limited
time and should spend time researching with focus and quality for the ultimate impact on their
patient population. This entire class focused on the ability to differentiate studies, the important
and application of each one and the steps to take in conducting them professionally (Bowman,
Neale, & Seehusen, 2016).
To conclude, the amount of research that was required in this course has equipped me with tools
and knowledge to be able to investigate the impact of disease on individuals and populations. I
now understand that epidemiological and statistical concepts can provide a starting point for
conversation for researchers to find out more about the prevalence of health problems. Providing
quality healthcare to patients and populations presents many challenges in the present healthcare
system. Epidemiology is a valuable asset in this effort. I learned from this course the different
ways of obtaining information from a research study and applying the information to a family
practice setting. In a nutshell, this course has helped me establish a good base to be able to
recognize the origin of disease processes, how to extract medical information to discern the
problem, and how to determine the right diagnostic test and treatment options based on the
disease process.
