How does the concept of wisdom in nursing informatics compare to the concept of professional

nursing judgment? What is DIKW and how do you "use" it in your practice?

Response:

While reading this week’s assignment, I compared wisdom and judgment in

nursing informatics to a novice and an expert nurse. Knowledge is understanding and

having the ability to comprehend facts and information. Wisdom is knowledge, which is

obtained through life experiences. It is knowing when to apply knowledge to oversee and

solve human needs (Matney, Staggers, & Avant, 2016). When comparing wisdom and

knowledge to nursing, wisdom would be an example of an expert nurse; whereas

knowledge would be equated to a novice nurse. Clinical wisdom is the ability of a nurse

to add experience and intuition to a situation involving patient care (McGongle, 2015).

For example: A young, female patient presents to the emergency department with

shortness of breath and tachycardia. Throughout the nurse’s assessment they discover the

patient is a smoker and on oral contraceptives. A novice nurse may think this patient is

presenting with an anxiety attack, yet an experienced nurse with wisdom will begin

treating this patient as if she had a pulmonary emboli. Wisdom related to nursing

judgment takes time to obtain, yet is very important and essential to nursing practice.

The DIKW is a framework, which consists of four components including: data,

information, knowledge, and wisdom. DIKW is used in a nurse’s daily practice. As

nurses we gather data through assessment. We then use that data and apply it to the
