Unit 4: Implications of Medications with
Food and Home Remedies
77 unread replies.77 replies.
Please choose a Respiratory Medication and discuss its implications and potential
interactions when taken with foods and home remedies. What would you teach a patient
about your chosen drug?
Place the name of your chosen medication in the header of your response. You may not
choose a medication that another student has already written about in the threads.

Hi Class!
The respiratory medication that I have chosen is Formoterol. Formoterol inhalation is a long-
acting bronchodilator and it relaxes muscles in the airways to improve breathing.
The implications of this medication is to monitor the cardiovascular status with periodic ECG’s,
BP and HR. Also, withhold the drug and notify the physician right away if there is any signs and
symptoms of bronchospasm. Bronchospasm is a spasm of the bronchial smooth muscle
producing narrowing of the bronchi. The lab tests that need to be monitored is serum
potassium and blood glucose. Monitor diabetics closely for any loss of glycemic control.
Potential interactions with Formoterol is that some brands of this medication comes in capsules
that may contain lactose and milk protein, so you should talk to your doctor before using this
form of formoterol if you have allergies or severe problems with lactose/milk sugar. Do not
breast feed while on this medication. This medication can also interact with caffeine, diet pills,
cold medication. Avoid drinking grapefruit juice, since it is an acid and can promote
complications.
