Unit 21 – P3
Introduction

In this assignment, I will be looking at the type of training and development that a business can offer.
This consists of internal and external types of training; I will be examining the advantages and
disadvantages of each type of training and then linking it to my chosen business – Vodaphone.

Internal

Internal training, also called in house training or on the job training, is training which takes place within
the organization. Generally, it is a cheaper form of training than some forms that are based outside of
the organization (external) because it is often performed by those within the organization. The business
can use their own staff, resources and facilities when performing internal training with workers who are
higher up being used as guides and mentors for newer and less experienced staff. Internal training
would be specific to the type of business, their values and policies and would change depending on the
business/where the business is based. There are different types of internal training:

 Induction
 Coaching
 Mentor/Buddy system
 Shadowing
 Peer training
 Job rotation
 Projects
 Business documentation
 Presentations
 Wikis

Induction training is a type of internal training which allows new employees to adapt and become
accustomed to their jobs and habituate to their working environment. They are introduced o the job and
showed how the business operates, including its wider activities. Examples of this are health and safety
training, meeting staff and instructions on logins, passwords etc. This training may take up to a week
usually but may sometimes only last a day or a couple of days; its often completed in groups for the
businesses to train more efficiently and to cut costs.

Coaching training is another internal training method where someone who is experienced in a certain
area and field of study gives support and guidance to a new and less experienced worker, looking to
develop their skills on the subject. This allows the coach to teach the worker on how to develop and
become a better and more efficient worker in that field. A coach will always encourage the worker, who
is being coached, to work out solutions and problems independently and it is a more practical approach
towards training – often used in sport. An advantage of coaching is that it may boost the motivation of
the worker, giving them more confidence and more of a reason to perform better in doing their job.

A mentor/Buddy system is a way of training workers within an organization where less experienced
workers are paired up with more experienced and advanced individuals. The more experience worker –
known as a mentor – would give guidance to the new worker in a way that would benefit them to
become a more experienced independent worker. An advantage of this is that the new worker would

, have a role model (the mentor/buddy) allowing them to know the right way to conduct business and
how to work in specific areas.

Shadowing is when a person who is less experienced within a business follows a staff member who has
more experience in work in general and within the business. This allows them to see how their work is
done and allows them to ask questions to the person they are shadowing; meaning they can get
information about the job easily. This is also low in costs – usually free because it isn’t as formal and
planned out as other training methods and usually consists of following the person working.

Peer training is where a group of staff, who have a similar level of knowledge and experience, work
together and communicate with each other in order to be trained. This often increases morale as well as
allowing staff to grow as individuals as well as part of a team. This method is often the most effective
because it is very cheap and is done by colleagues within a business who usually have a relatively simple
job description.

Job rotation is where an employee who is in a set job role switches with another employee who is
working in a different area. This is done in order to allow staff to gain experience in different areas of the
business; working in a different job role will make it easier for them to learn skills. Job rotations are
often used for graduate training, allowing for more knowledge on each department of the business and
the different areas within it.

Projects are another internal training method used by businesses and is when staff are trained in several
activities over a certain amount of time in order to meet a basis set by the business. Projects are often
done in a group and is beneficial to the employees being trained in terms of learning important skills
which would help them in their work.

Furthermore, business documentation is another internal training method which is used within
businesses and usually consists of textbooks or staff handouts which are created by the business and
give employees more information. This allows the employees being trained to study more information
themselves instead of it being presented to them via a presentation for example which may allow for
more effective training.

Presentations are a way for a business to deliver training which is usually done with a speaker/presenter
at the front of a room who is delivering a presentation on something which would aid the training of the
employees; this is usually done on PowerPoint and is cost effective and a good way to train multiple
people at once.

Wikis may be used in training in businesses in order to train employees. This is the use of software that
organizes/collects data that is edited and produced to be shared amongst employees in the business.
Wikis allow for employees to make changes themselves to it which would benefit both the business and
the employees as they are getting the information that they need to get in order to complete their
training.

Advantages

The main advantage of internal methods of training is that it is beneficial to the employees being trained
because they can gain experience while doing the job and are supported by expert trainers/coaches
which would higher morale and confidence. This would increase staff retention and would be the reason
