Assignment Introduction:
Communication Channels:
What is induction training?
Induction training is the training that an employee receives when they first join the business. It helps
the employee become more accustomed to their new work environment faster and allows for them to
become productive in their new role more quickly. It also prevents easy to avoid mistakes a new
employee may make as they do not understand the proper company technique and procedure.

The different mediums of communication can have different levels of effectiveness and influence,
depending on the quality of the communication channel and the learner concerned.

A presentation is a communication channel that
businesses can use to address their new staff in a
variety of manners. For example, they could be
presenting and talking to the group of new employees.
A presentation is a visual means of communication.

medium that businesses can use to both teach and

either at home or in the workplace.

,P1: You have/ have not planned an appropriate induction programme for a group of new starters in a
selected business using your own research.
The business that I will create an induction programme for is Argos which is a UK based general
merchandise retailer.
Argos’s current induction programme:
Argos’s current induction programme is not publicly available for viewing but I have managed to find
some relevant extracts from current or past staff members from online sources such as forums.
My Findings
New starters are Argos will be given and expected to complete the following paperwork:
- Paperwork including: induction handbook, employee application form, safety at work form
and a welcome pack – including necessary uniform and name badge. This paperwork is the first
part of their induction programme and is handed out before the new-starter begins.
- The new-starters are given online e-learning to complete, featuring a multichoice test.
- Contract with X number of hours for each week
New starters at Argos will attend an induction process that is timetabled to meet the below criteria:
- A welcome day
- Role based learning activities
- Coaching cards
- Four-hour high energy workshop
- Two-day management workshop (If applying to a managerial position)
- Fill out feedback sheet
My Induction Plan:
Pre-employment:
As the name suggests, pre-employment refers to the part of the induction programme that is
performed before the employee begins work at Argos. In this part of the induction programme, Argos
can perform pre-employment checks to ensure that the new employee has adequate skill levels and
the needed qualifications.
In my pre-employment section of my induction programme, I will include a handbook/welcome pack
that will outline the vision of the company, as well as useful and applicable information for the new
employee such as what is expected of them when they are working and what the upcoming induction
and training days are.
