Primary health care is an important part of health care and relies on principles
of health promotion, disease prevention, community participation, and health
technology Health promotion improves the level of health in a population by
preventing diseases, improving fitness and well being . Providers play
an important role in discussing with their patients ways to stay healthy. This
will lead to lowering healthcare costs throughout the entire healthcare system
in the United States. Health promotion and prevention includes vaccinations,
obesity, diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol, and drug abuse to prevent heart
problems, addictions, strokes and cancer. Education is key to prevention of
, disease. Getting patients to take care of themselves and understanding the
importance to quality life is a responsibility that providers need to tackle.
I could not agree more with your statement that providers have such a big role
in communicating with their patients about some several ways to stay healthy,
not only providers are getting patients to take care of themselves but also this
will lead to lower healthcare cost in the U.S. To me this is somewhat a win-win
situation for the patients, providers and healthcare business.
Your post covers everything there is about primary health and the importance
of it. Personally, I do not think there is enough emphasis placed on checking
in with your PCP. There are a lot of individuals who do skip their annual
, checkups. Furthermore, many PCPs do not spend as much time with the
patient as they used to before. If a patient takes the time out to come and wait
and see the doctor, the doctor should spend more than 2-3 mins with them.

Hi Donna,
Just to add a tidbit to your post. The hardest thing to come by is a good,
accessible, thorough and sympathetic doctor. I live and work in NYC and this
is still an issue, although, good surgeons are a dime a dozen.

Flordeluna,
You post had great points, but I want to touch a little more on communication.
An effective exchange between patients and physicians helps them
understand what the other person is thinking. It helps them understand each
other better and, as a result, it can make them more comfortable with each
other. There are many aspects that go into a primary care physician's position.
, One is having a great communication between patient and physicians. In
order for a patient to understand the care they are receiving and they care
they may need. A physician must explain the plan of care very clear. The
patient should ask question needed for them to fully comprehend the visit's
discussion. You never want to have miscommunication in these situation
regarding your health. Patients should never be afraid to ask questions. The
primary care physician is there to help you better take care of yourself and
you cannot effectively achieve that if you don't understand what's going on.

Hi Camille,
I agree with your statement that there should be an effective exchange of
communication between primary care physicians and patients. In my own
opinion, I think there are some barriers between patients and physicians that
hinder the efficiency of communication. Barriers like, language and level of
education. Indeed that physicians must explain thoroughly the care plan or
plan of treatment very clear, and take time to listen to the patient's concern,
and for patients should never be afraid or be ashamed to ask questions health
related.
