Samples and Data Collection
After reviewing the data presented in the ANA Fast Facts, some of the key attributes
that I can identify are is the predicted number of registered nurse jobs that could be available
in the United States through 2022. The data shows that there could be more than 100,000
registered nurse jobs annually in the U.S. by 2022. According to the data, this could be
because of the more than 500,000 seasoned RNs who are anticipated to retire by 2022 as
reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As such, the data suggests that there is need
to educate and train at least 1.1 million new RNs to replace the retirees if nursing shortage
should be avoided (American Nurses Association, 2014).
Some of the data that I found interesting in this report relates to the age of nurses and
their levels of education. According to this article, it can be concluded that the median age of
the nurses in the United States is 50. Data also indicates that 53% of nurses in the Unites
States are above the age of 50 years (American Nurses Association, 2014). This indicates that
there is need to educate and train new nurses as more than 50% of the nurse population are
older and approaching the retirement age (American Nurses Association, 2014). However,
this might be challenging as there is a decline in the faculty’s ability to educate as many
nurses as they are needed. If the United States moves at the current pace, it will be impossible
to achieve the IOM goal of having 80% of nurses with a bachelor’s degree. The ANA Fast
Facts report seeks to open the eyes of the public to the essence of educating and training new
nurses in preparation to fill the gaps of the soon-to-retire nurses in the United States.
In data collection, an instrument or tool is reliable if the same result is obtained from
using the method on repeated occasions. It refers to the consistency of data collected in
research. On the other hand, an instrument or tool is considered valid if it measures what it
intends to measure (Taherdoost, 2016). The importance of reliability in data collection is that
