Chem 120
While we often do not realize it, acidic and basic solutions are a part of our daily lives.
I would like each of us to go home and pick a solution in your home, work, or even
outside (be sure to check the label to make sure that whatever you are measuring is
nonhazardous and water based). Some possible solutions are shampoos, beverages,
still water in your backyard, contact solution, ect. Before moving on, post your
predictions and why you believe your solution to be acidic or basic. Depending on your
instructor, you will then post on one of the following:
If I have provided each of you with a strip of pH paper, perform your experiment by
using your pH paper to measure the pH of your solution. After you have performed your
experiment, report your findings back to the group and be sure to classify your example
as an acidic or basic solution as well as what compound or compounds in your solution
you believe cause the solution to be basic or acidic and why.
If you were not provided with pH strip, look online to determine if your solution is acidic
or basic. Explain what compound or compounds in your solution you believe cause the
solution to be basic or acidic and why?
Make sure to post at least three high quality posts. Your instructor will open new topics
of discussion throughout the week.
Solution used was: Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Shampoo ( Aloe/ Sweet
Clover/ Rose)
Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Shampoo is an acidic solution with a pH of 5
from the pH strip given in class
Active ingredients: Water (Aqua),Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate,
Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-2 Cocamide, Fragrance(Parfum), Aloe
Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Citric
Acid, Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender)
Flower Extract, Melilotus Officinalis Extract, PEG-150 Distearate,
Most shampoo products are made to be acidic to help prevent bacteria and
fungi from growing on your scalp. The acid is used to help clean the hair. This
shampoo is considered slightly acidic, if the shampoo was more acidic it
could cause damage to the hair and scalp. All of the ingredients listed above
are combined to provide a good balanced solution. I think the Citric Acid, Leaf
Juice, fragrance and the glycerin all play a part in making this shampoo a
slightly acidic solution.

For my first post, I chose to use Brasso metal polish. Brasso is a multipurpose
cleaner and has been used in household since 1905. It contains ammonia but no
harsh acids and can be hazardous if use improperly. Brasso is used to clean tarnish
from metals such as brass, copper, chrome pewter nd stainless steal. It is a water
based solution and as you can see from my PH testing it is a base because my strip
turned blue .

Hello,
My liquid that I found in my home is hydrogen peroxide H 2O2. Hydrogen peroxide is a
mild antiseptic solution, that is used to help prevent infection in the area of the skin
that has been opened exposed to infectious elements that may cause infection.
Observation: to see if hydrogen peroxide is acidic or basic through the use of pH
indicator strips..
Hypothesis: that hydrogen peroxide will be acidic. Oxide are nonmetals and are
considered acidic which is why I think that it is acidic.
Experiment: a portion of the hydrogen peroxide was pour directly onto the pH strip.
Immediately after the hydrogen was applied the pH strip was read. The strip was
compare to the pH indicator bottle levels and the value was 4 (which is a liter orange
color). No controls were performed. In order to properly do controls on these strips
we would need a solution that contains a high pH level (8-14) and a low pH level (0-
6). Most of the time these controls are made and are distributed through a
manufacture.
Theory: the pH value of 4, indicates that the hydrogen peroxide is acidic.
This element is a acidic solution.
