Running Head: Concept of Caring 1

Version 1

NR 500 Week 2 Graded Assignment; Artistic Expression of Concept Caring (Version 1)

Artistic Expression of Caring Concept

Caring is the central concept to nursing profession. It is influenced by the knowledge and

skills of the nurses (CCN, lesson 2, 2017). It is important for nurses to be equipped with relevant

knowledge and skills to be able to care their patients appropriately. A nurse should be able to care

for his or her patients and promote health for the maximum restoration of patient’s health and

autonomy. Caring in nursing is communicative action. It is the respect all human life,

circumscribing human experience in the form of verbal and nonverbal communication between

two equal human being (Robinson Wolf & Nagle Bailey, 2016).

Definition of Caring

Nursing as a profession, has a duty to educate, communicate, and provide resources to

patients (Maroon, 2012).Patients perceive themselves as vulnerable being when a patient’s

autonomy is being challenged due to an impairment of a person's physical or emotional state

(Dobrowolska & Palese, 2016). This is when a patient desires care to enable him to restore his

autonomy.

Holistic nursing care is being educated and promoted to nursing students. Holistic care

encompasses patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual care. Many traditional nursing programs

focus on the physical and mental need of patients. Patients’ spiritual care needs are often

overlooked. In my nursing experiences, I found emotional care is as important as physical care.

Patients are well informed of their disease process and what to do what no to do with their

physical conditions by nurses and other healthcare providers while they are admitted in

hospitals. Patient education is part of nurses’ role in promoting health and disease prevention.

If patients’ spiritual needs are not met, patient education cannot be effective. According to

Bosewell, Cannon & Miller (2013), students who embraced the idea of emotional wellbeing

had positive effect on their nursing care. Nurse practitioners who care their patients’ holistic

need often encourage them to provide more information about their living conditions and other

perspective of their lives. It is perceived by patients that their providers being empathetic

(Bentley, Stirling, Robinson & Minstrell, 2016).

Expression of Caring

I chose collage in pdf format to express caring in nursing profession. It illustrates the

caring of nursing encompasses the spectrum of human experience. It is in every part of our

lives. Caring in nursing profession can be seen in pediatric, geriatric, dialysis and war time.

Conclusion

The key concept of caring in nursing is providing holistic care. It encompasses broad

spectrum in human lives. By completing this assessment, I have learned the compassion that

nurses have to care for their patients and the power of caring a nurse has in proving human

dignity.
