A. Nursing Theory
Nursing theory helps guide the way nurses think, and helps develop nursing
practice[BCh14]. Dorothea Orem’s self-care model, has influenced my professional career. The
self-care model states that patients recover more quickly if they can perform their own self-care
as much as they are able to[Ali16]. I utilized this model while working in long term care. It
helped me increase the quality of life for my residents.
A1. Excellent Nursing Practices
According to the self-care model. A nurse is needed when a patient is unable or limited in
providing self-care for themselves. There are five methods the nurse can provide excellent care
using this theory: doing for your patient, guiding, supporting, providing, and teaching[Ali16].
The nurse will provide care for the patient helping them regain previous functioning[BCh14].
This theory allows the nurse to work with the patient. The nurse is able to plan the best care for
the patient, and teach the patient how to care for themselves. By using this theory, the nurse
becomes an advocate for the patient. Guiding the patient to their highest ability of optimal health.
The number one goal is to help the patient reach their highest level of functioning. Nurses should
use this theory to help organize their care, and plan care plans that help rehabilitate.
A2. Professional Practice Nursing Theory
I have utilized the self-care model through my entire professional career. When I worked
in long term care I focused on restorative care. The patient focus aspect with geriatrics is to allow
the elder to have as much autonomy as possible. By supporting when needed, teaching, assistive
devices, and providing a safe environment. I could utilize the self-care model with my residents.
, C304 TASK 1 3
I have continued to use this type of model into my school nursing career. I educate, guide,
and provide assistance to the students at the school. Through teaching in the schools. I can help
the students learn self-care. I focus on nutrition, handwashing, exercise, and diseases. The kids
can help use the teaching information to grow in their own self care needs.
B. Contributions of 19th Or 20th Century Historical Nursing
The first historical nurse I want to discuss is Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale
developed the environmental theory. Florence Nightingale is one of the most influential nurses of
all time. Nurses start learning about her from the moment they start nursing school. Florence
started out with the goal of easing the suffering of the injured soldiers[BCh14]. Eventually
Florence would come to write a book teaching about her many concerns. Cleanliness was a large
part of her book, and changed the way people gave care. She wrote about cleaning the patients,
and hand washing[BCh14]. Florence’s teachings inspire me, because it shows how a nurse can
improve healthcare. Her teachings show nurses that our ideas are important. They are needed to
improve, and grow the healthcare field.
Another historical nurse is Margaret Sanger. Margaret Sanger was important in
establishing women’s rights. She spoke out for women, and dedicated her care to pregnant
women. Her main accomplishment was opening the first birth control clinic in the united states
in 1916[SBB17]. Her theory was based on education and free access to family planning[SBB17].
I think it is important to recognize nurses in history that believed in something, and took a stand
for what they believed in. Margert inspired me by reminding me to fight for what I believe in.
That is truly how we advocate for our patients.
