MIS 589 Week 5 Discussion – The Internet
Explain one reason why you might experience long response times in getting a web page
from a server in your own city?
Answer: Due to Latency. Even though we are accessing a website that is hosted in our
own city, our request packet would go through several networks/hops. And not every
network has the same design or the same performance. If the network provider who is
hosting the website is experiencing high traffic, latency to that website will increase
tremendously.
There are a few simple tests to find out the why the web page has slow response. First
you can check if your connection is causing this issue by testing your internet speed. You
can check this with locally hosted speed test server. If your internet speed is OK, you can
ping the website to check the latency. Lastly, if you want to know which hop is causing
the issue you can try a trace route to the website.
How would you check the Internet connection speed from your computer?
There are several services available to test speed of the Internet through a web browser:
1. Speedtest.net
2. SpeedOf.Me Speakeasy
3. YourSpeed
4. Bandwidthplace Speed Test
5. McAfee Internet Connection Speedometer
WAN networks can cover from cities to countries. WAN networks can also cover a much
shorter distance as well, like buildings to buildings in the same city. Most organizations
do not own their own WANs. Organizations typically rely on regular providers like
AT&T, Sprint, and Comcast to provide the type of internet connection organization needs.
To make the required connections, these circuit connections are leased out to these
organizations.
WAN architecture which I would recommend is the packet-switched networks. I would
recommend this because Cookies Are Us has 100 cookies stores spread all over the
United States and there will be a good probability that in some areas the connection speed
would not be great as compared to the rest of the stores. This can be completed by each
store having a packet assembly/disassembly device (PAD). PAD converts the originator
data into data link layer and network layer packets sends it through the packet-switched
network. An additional benefit of using packet-switched network is that it would provide
guaranteed data transmission throughout the network. At the end of each day, the store
sends sales and inventory data to headquarters. For this design and with need to transfer
data only at the end of each day, the services that would be utilized would be Ethernet
