HUMN 303N Week 8 Discussion: Interdisciplinary
Works

Week 8: Looking Ahead
After seven weeks of uncovering various aspects of the humanities, the arts, the history, the
philosophy, and so on, we bring the conversation full circle. Discuss how humanities may impact
your life on a professional and personal level. Identify specific moments in the course that
helped you identify new or different ways of evaluation and/or analysis. Locate an article about
your field of study that reflects the practice and understanding of the humanities and share that
research while explaining its connection and significance to the humanities.

Before taking this class I would have considered myself someone who was cultured in a sense
that I have travelled to many different places, have grandparents who came from other
countries, have friends of different backgrounds, listen to various types of music and enjoy
other aspects of the art world. However, as I worked my way through the course I realized that
there is so much more to the world than what we are seeing on a daily basis and the only way
to really describe that is by referring to the Humanities.
I think it is so important to have a deep understanding of the arts and the history behind it
because it tells the story of the evolution of man. For instance, the cave paintings at Lascaux
help us to understand how the earliest humans embarked on life and what they found
important, such as depicting pictures of hunting to survive and leaving behind remanence of
their ritual ceremonies (Sayre, 2013). As we move through history many great events that have
shaped our world are explored and documented through the arts to show how we as the
human race have evolved into the world as we know it today.
I think something very important that I have taken from this class is to appreciate different
cultures and how they all work together. Culture, as defined by Sayre, “encompasses the values
and behaviors shared by a group of people, developed over time, and passed down from one
generation to the next,” (2013). The values and behaviors are passed down through language,
paintings, sculptures, music, movies, poems and just about anything relating to the
arts. Although this is something I have always been aware of, it was something that I took for
granted and never appreciated for its true value.
Loretta, C Ford,EdD, RN, PNP, FAAN, FAANP stated, “changing demographics, globalization,
epidemiology, technology, and politics are equally compelling arguments for a more highly
educated and well-rounded nursing workforce,” and “More than technical skills, intellectual,
creative, and personal proficiencies will be needed to address the problems for the highly
dynamic and uncertain future in health care in which nursing will play a central and leading
role,” (Gardenier, 2014). I believe this to be true because it is so important to understand the
person, rather than just define them by their disease or ailment. This class opened my eyes
even more to accept people for who they are, no matter what their background, and apply it to
my future nursing career. I know that throughout my life and career I will encounter many more
