Choose one of the music or dance movements that you read about this week and at least one
work from that movement. Then, address the following:

• Examine the movement and specific work in relation to historical and political influences
of the movement.
• Identify characteristics of the movement and how the work reflects these characteristics.
• Include a statement from the artist and one from a critic.
• Include a link to the lyrics and/or video depending on your choice.



The music movement I choose is the Pop Punk genre that became a huge mainstream success in
the mid 90’s to late 2000’s. The musical movement actually began around the mid-70’s along
with the genre Punk Rock before the differences were established. Pop Punk can now best be
described as Punk Rock music that includes the musical elements common to the genre Pop. It
fuses the punk style of fast tempos, chord changes, and prominent electric guitars with the Pop
style of catchy melodies and musical/vocal hooks that are repeated in songs which typically
followed lyrical themes of rebellion, teenage romance, politics and more (Rock My World,
2019). Perhaps one of the most well-known and influential Pop Punk bands of the era was Green
Day.

Green Day created the album “American Idiot” which was released in 2004 during the time of
George W. Bush’s presidential re-election campaign. Within the album included a song also titled
American Idiot that was created as a politically charged statement that threw shots towards the
media and the government. It accused them of using propaganda to stir up paranoia and hysteria
to sell the American public on the Iraq War following the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Pitchfork critic Johnny Loftus (2004) stated, “American Idiot is certainly the band’s most
