I first became a nurse in 2008 and always planned to go back to school for my
bachelor’s degree. Finally 13 years later, in the fall of 2020, I took the plunge and applied for
the online accelerated RN to BSN program. I already had all of my prerequisites except for
statistics. I took two to three classes at a time depending on the start dates. I took classes for
each start date and am set to graduate this fall. I was able to complete the bridge program in
one year.
The BSN program made me realize who important and useful nursing research can be in
my nursing practice. I have never had an interest in the research aspect of nursing until I began
researching specific topics to my specialized field threw out the bridge program. Retention is a
focal point of the company I work for and my capstone project gave me the opportunity to
research and improve my retention at work. The course Nursing Leadership and Management
taught me to understand my leadership style and how to identify weakness that need
improvement. The main weakness that I have is being too cautious, a lot of times I tend to hold
onto tasks in fear that is I delegate them it may not get completed to my standards. The
Predictive Index describes this behavior as, “let me drive.” I have a need to feel in control at all
times which may make me appear to over-analyze situations and slow to adopt new ideas. This
also causes me to be less likely to take risks, which can be a strength and/or a weakness
depending on the situation the risk may set you back in your career if it fails, but on the other
hand some risks tend to pay off and have big returns. I am a very curious person by nature,
which lends to my love for learning and continuing to grow as an individual every day. The
Bachelors program has helped me identify and improve my leadership style and techniques.
