Introduction
Theories form the basis of the actions or behavior of professionals in various fields,
including the nursing profession. Nurses have a variety of theories or models to choose from
when carrying out their duties. Nursing scholars developed nursing theories and models after
researching various aspects of healthcare. Moreover, most of the theories aim at improving
patients' health by providing appropriate or relevant care services. Additionally, most nursing
theories are anchored on addressing the needs of patients and/or their families. This paper
discusses Orem's self-care deficit theory.
Orem’s Self-care Deficit Theory
Dorothea Orem developed the self-care deficit theory from 1959 to 2001
(Petiprin, 2020b). Orem was a nurse who practiced in the medical-surgical and pediatric units.
During her career, Orem was focused on designing a model of care that would enhance the
quality of healthcare services in her state (Petiprin, 2020a). As a result, she developed the self-
care deficit theory that emphasizes the ability of an individual to perform functions that
maintain/improve their health, life, and overall well-being. According to the theory, healthcare
services are a means of restoring human functioning or self-care abilities whenever there is a
deficit (Petiprin, 2020a). Therefore, based on the model, nurses' role is to help individuals regain
their self-care abilities after developing an illness that may impair their functioning.
Scope of the Theory
Orem’s self-care theory is a grand theory that can be used in different healthcare settings,
including home-based care and among in-patients. Additionally, since the theory focuses on the
well-being of individuals, it can be useful in developing care models or plans that meet the
