GNUR 294 EXAM III
Autonomic Nervous System
Focus on the sympathetic nervous system
PNS does the opposite of the SNS
Adrenergic- adrenaline
Norepinephrine
Helps to bind with these receptors and make a response in the system
Alpha receptors and beta receptors
Almost al the drugs (from a cardiovascular standpoint) will effect these
receptors i.e. beta 2- adrenergic agonists
Sympathetic- fight or flight
All of these things that occur when NE is released and binds with the
adrenergic receptors and all the adrenaline will be released
1. The heart rate will go up- higher rate to support the oxygen needs
2. Blood pressure goes up
3. Bronchioles are going to dilate- deeper breaths and more oxygen
4. Glucose released by the liver (stored as glycogen in the liver)
Because of all the blood is being shunted to the main organs, the organs that
don’t really make a difference all will be stopped i.e. digesting food
Patients who have an increased heart rate or BP or extra myocardial oxygen
demands b/c of blocked vessels are going to need this processed blocked
from happening
If someone is critically ill and dying going to give them synthetic versions of
these drugs to increase hear rate, BP, etc.
To be an agonist of these drugs is going to be in emergency situations
To be an antagonist will be given a lot
Alpha agonists and beta agonists
If I want to bind with someone need to see what these receptors do
specifically
Alpha 1 receptors:
o Causes vasoconstriction- usually more peripheral vasoconstriction
o Pupillary dilatation
Beta 1 (cardiac receptors)
o Increased heart rate, increased contractility- work on the heart itself
o Decrease insulin release from pancrease and liver
Beta 2
o bronchodilation
o Relaxation of the uterus
Nonselective Adrenergic Agonist- affects alpha and beta receptors
Have to know what it is going to effect
Older categories of drugs
Epinephrine- if given going to cause massive vasoconstriction, increased
heart rate, increased BP, slow down the digestive system, bronchodilation.
Might be given to people in anaphylaxis (allergires) – the histamine rlease
