Pharmacology is the science of drugs-how to design, how they work, how they are
processed by the body.
Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of the drugs and the possible poisons
Drugs
A drug is a chemically defined agent that can be used to provoke a measurable
response in a biological system. Ie. A lot of the drugs in broad definition are not
drugs, but some of the chemical components of them are drugs
2 major types:
Therapeutic drugs
Drugs of abuse
There are some drugs that are in the “overlap”: eg. Morphine-related to heroin
Conventional drugs have at least 3 names:
Common name: The common name of the active component
Proprietary names: The names given by the specific company for the selling
Chemical name: The unique name based on the chemistry
The drugs are grouped based on:
Therapeutic use(s)
Mechanism of action – becomes the more commonly used way
Mechanisms of action intro
Exogenous – from outside the body
Endogenous – inside the body
Drugs are exogenous molecules that mimics or blocks the action of the endogenous
molecules or systems. The molecules of the drug can be identical or chemically
distinct from the endogenous chemicals
The concept of a receptor, a molecule has a specific binding site for the drug, is
central to the pharmacology.
