Family Nurse Practitioner Boards: Study Plan and Review
- I hope to take the exam in September. I will not be telling anyone, except
my husband and parents the exact day of my examination. Telling social
media, coworkers, and my friends would personally just add to my anxiety
and pressure about the boards. This might not be the case for you and it
might actually help you through the process if you let the world know. I just
think it is important for everyone to think about it now and make a decision
on what they feel is right for them.
- Please read through my resources section, this section includes what the
items cost and the reasoning behind my review choices. There are also a
few bits of information that might be helpful when it comes to you studying
for the boards.
- I was thinking about purchasing Fitzgerald Mp3 Review, but it came down to
MONEY. I also made my decision with what Fitzgerald stated in her FREE
webinar. She states she would not recommend doing the Mp3 review as
your only review! She states to do the live review course or the online
review course, along with it if you chose to purchase it. It essentially
includes all the same material, but she feels people typically will only listen
to the review and not access the visual aids.
- TIMING AND PLANNING!!! I feel these words are crucial in the success of
ANYONE passing Capstone and boards.
o I just completed 511 and was able to utilize vacation time in order to
do so. Starting in January, I will cut back to part time, 3 (9hr) days of
work. I have an extremely supportive place of employment and my
clinical rotations are with them as well. I have heard from numerous
people in this group, that if you have the ability to cut back your
hours to do so.
o It has also been recommended to save up vacation time and use it
within your capstone class. I have had to already max out most of my
vacation, but will build up more vacation hours, even when working
part-time. I will keep reassessing my vacation time and scheduling
what I have available for my capstone course. If you are unable to go
part time though, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you think about taking
some vacation time during capstone. Of course I don’t have the

personal experience of going through Capstone yet, but I believe
those who have would agree with me.
o When planning your study schedule, take in consideration Spring and
summer break. If there is an area that you feel you struggle in more
and it deserves more time to focus on, then you should certainly
spend more time on it. School breaks might assist you in dedicating
more time to these areas. I have not decided which areas these are
yet. I am a Certified Diabetes Educator and work in an Endocrinology
department, so I might choose not to spend as much time reviewing
this area. Cardiovascular and Neurological disorders I do know will
require more time from me when reviewing.
o BE FORGIVING! I have started this now, in the thoughts that life is
crazy and things will happen that might keep me from studying. So be
REALISTIC in your goals and schedule. I have 20 review areas and I
have 31 weeks till Fitzgerald LIVE, 32 weeks to my capstone course,
and roughly 44 weeks till I sit for the boards. I hope to get through my
personal review right before I go to Fitzgerald LIVE. I personally feel
this will prepare me to get the most out of the Fitzgerald LIVE and
Capstone. This allows me at least 1 week for each 20-review areas
and then an additional 1-week for 11-review areas that are more
difficult and lengthy. I don’t give exact dates in my schedule below,
but I include how much time I will spend on each subject, this is liable
to change once I start. This review will technically start January 4th.
o I honestly have started reviewing already, but I have not been
hardcore dedicated to it, just questions hear and there. Once
completed with this I will have Fitzgerald Live, where I hope to really
polish and refine what I need to focus on. This is where I will also
learn any new material that might be out, that was not included in
my review material. Then Capstone will begin and should be easier to
get through since I have already prepared through my own review.
Once Capstone is complete I hope to sit for the boards in 3 weeks.
This time I can spend reviewing, but at this point I am unsure on what
my actual review schedule will look like.
