Week 2 Assignment
Chapter 2 Case 2.5 Gateway Hospital (A GVV Case)
1. What are the main arguments you feel Troy will make and reasons and rationalizations
you need to address?
One of the main arguments I feel Troy will state is this being an isolated incident and that it
won't happen again. Troy wanted to ensure he fulfilled his obligations on his business trip as
well as his obligation as a parent for Spring Break. Kristen needs to realize that if Troy asks this
of her now, he may feel comfortable enough to ask her for another ethical violation in the future.
Another argument I feel Troy will make is that him submitting expenses for 3 more meals and an
additional night in the hotel would not be hurting anyone (Materiality). Physically it won't, but it
can hurt the company and their financial records. The expenses should not be submitted for
reimbursement and doing so would be committing a fraudulent act also known as occupational
fraud. Occupational fraud also referred to as employee fraud is one of the most common crimes
committed (Kennedy,
2016)”. Troy is aware that “the hospital has poor controls and a culture of “not rocking the
boat,” and that other employees have routinely inflated expense reports in the past,” to try and
justify his actions (Mintz & Morris, 2017). Lastly, I feel Troy will argue that he understands that
his actions are unfair to the company, but he does not want to hurt the feelings of his children by
cancelling their spring break plans (Locus of Loyalty).
