COMM 223: Persuasion in Communication
Ethics and Persuasion
When I think of “ethics” the first thing that comes to mind is that ethics is a person’s
choices or behaviors throughout their life. Rights, obligations, language use, and what it
means to live an ethical life are all discussed in ethics. Persuasion is communication
intended to influence choice (Howell, 1973). Why is ethics important in persuasion?
Ethical behavior is important to persuasion because it allows for communication to take
place in a humane manner, and its significance is marked by the evolution of the
communication process that has been practiced and studied for centuries. Ethics are the
foundation of a civilized society, and ethical behavior is a vital component of any
society's development (Davis, January 9, 2019).
There are other reasons to engage in ethical behavior, too, such as the need to maintain
your reputation and provide an objective assessment of the facts. Ethical persuasion is
important in our modern world also because it gives you the opportunity to present an
impartial and precise argument of your proposal and to provide open facts with ethics
without deception. To comprehend themselves, ethical persuasion is a human being's
internal ability to treat others with respect, understanding, compassion, and justice. The
following are the stages of ethical persuasion: Investigate the other person's point of
, view. Persuasion is not always ethical. If persuasion is used for personal advantage at the
expense of others, or for personal gain without the audience's knowledge, it is often
regarded unethical. Coercion, brainwashing, and torture, for example, are never regarded
ethical.
Persuasion is a vital professional growth skill in both business and personal life for
a variety of reasons. Most essential, persuasion encourages people to pursue choices that
will benefit them, despite any mental barriers they may face. When a speaker's main
purpose is to get others to do something, he or she will also aim for one of four sub-goals:
adoption, discontinuance, deterrent, or continuation of a behavior. The process of
persuading someone else to do something or accept an idea is known as persuasion. A
person with strong persuasion skills can persuade others to put in the effort necessary to
succeed.
When it comes to ethical theories there are four broad categories which are
deontology, utilitarianism, rights, and virtues. However, there are only two that interest
me most and they are deontology and utilitarianism. The word deon denotes "obligation"
or "necessity." The suffix –ology denotes "something's science or study." As a result,
deontology is the science or study of responsibility and duty. Deontology refers to a
group of moral theories, the most famous of which is based on the great philosopher
Immanuel Kant's argument that some moral requirements apply regardless of the
consequences (Kant, I, 2018). Deontological ethics is the focal point of the action itself
(Thames B, 2018). According to deontology, a morally immoral act can lead to
something good. For example, if someone breaks into your home and you shoot and kill
the intruder that is an immoral act that led to something good. Yes, killing is wrong but,
you were protecting you family which is the right thing to do.
