Unit 14D Second experiment
Preparation of a compound without a carbonyl functional group (a halogenoalkane from
an alcohol)
Aim: To safely prepare 1-Bromobutane from butan-1-ol and determine the yield and purity in
the laboratory.
Introduction:
I reacted butanol with sodium bromide to produce 1- bromobutane and sodium hydroxide.
Reactants;
Butanol, sodium bromide
Reagents;
Concentrated sulfuric acid.
Predicted products;
1-bromobutane, sodium hydroxide.
Quantities used;
10 grams of sodium bromide, 6 grams of butan-1-ol, 10cm3 of distilled water, 10cm3 of
concentrated sulfuric acid.
Apparatus:

Method:
1. In a 50cm3 pear shaped flask, I placed 10 grams of solid sodium bromide (NaBr) and
7.5cm3 of butan-1-ol (6 grams) into 10cm3 of distilled water to dissolve.
2. I then fit a flask to the reflux condenser and attached a funnel to the top.
3. Next I cooled the mixture in an ice bath, and whilst stirring I slowly added 10cm3 of
concentrated sulfuric acid.
4. I then placed the flask in a heating mantle, attached a reflux condenser, heated to boiling
point and then adjusted the heating to a good reflux.
5. Then I refluxed for 45 minutes, removing the heat and leaving the condenser to operate
for a few minutes.
6. I then removed the condenser and assembled the apparatus for simple distillation, using
a 50mL Erlenmeye as collecting flask.
7. I distilled the mixture, monitoring the temperature until no more oily droplets
came over and recorded the temperature when distillation started (between 99 to
102 ℃ the product distilled).
8. To confirm no droplets are obtained, I collected 3 drops of distillate in a test tube
containing 1mL of water and verified if they are miscible.
