Amcu rejects Sibanye’s R250 wage increase offer

By Itumeleng Mafisa

18 August 2021

m
Johannesburg − The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has criticised a

er as
proposed wage increase at Sibanye-Stillwater in the gold wage talks, describing it as even less than

co
the government’s grant to the unemployed affected by Covid-19.

eH w
Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa said the union would approach this year’s wage negotiations with

o.
the spirit of honouring the fallen Marikana miners who were killed by police in a labour dispute in 2012.
rs e
The Star understands that the unions were negotiating with individual mining companies because of
ou urc
the impact of Covid-19 on individual companies.

“The R250 proposed by Sibanye in the gold sector negotiations, which is less than the R350 grant
o

given by the government, is rejected in honour of our fallen comrades,” Mathunjwa said.

vi y re

He said Sibanye had not learnt lessons from the Marikana massacre in how to deal with strikes. More
concerning was the mining companies’ relationship with the state and the police.

“We note the arrogance of Sibanye-Stillwater and its toxic collusion with the state in 2019 wage
ed d

negotiations and strike. We prevented another Marikana where Sibanye was colluding with the police
in preparation to attack Amcu members who were in a protected strike. Sibanye-Stillwater was

servicing the police nyalas and all the vehicles that were to be used to unleash violence against the
members of Amcu who were in a protected strike. We quickly brought this to the attention of the sitting
minister and to the sitting president of the country, but even today there was no answer,” Mathunjwa
is

said.
Th

He said he was concerned by the greed in the mining industry and the lack of care for workers who
toil hard to extract minerals from under the ground.

“South Africa, I beseech you today, you are a rich country. Capitalism is characterised by the mass
sh

accumulation by the elite and politically connected. Mining communities remain poor, yet they have
precious commodities around them,” Mathunjwa said.
