During the Late Victorian era, we encounter with emerging technologies and innovations.

When we consider social and historical background of the society, these novel gadgets and

machines are very fascinating. During the Victorian era, many technological inventions took

place such as bicycles, trains, the railways and the steamships. These inventions may have

caused potential concerns among people because everyday routines of people change

dramatically. Also, child labor was used extensively during Victorian era along with replacement

of humans with machines. Both advents of technology and detrimental effects of it played a role

acceptance of new technologies by the society. In Dracula, we see many aspects of technology

integrated in the story. Moreover, the form of the novel is a product of media technology because

the characters in Dracula communicate through telegraph.

Characters in this novel depict a technological use for the purpose of media and

communication. Mina used the typewriter, Dr. Seward uses phonograph and Mina and Harper

use short hand. Bram Stoker enthusiastically refers to these technologies and he creates up to

date and convincing story of the era. But when we consider technologies of that era, the media

technologies in Dracula appear more advanced and futuristic. For example, Mina’s typewriter

had better function in qualities from other typewriters existed at those times. Stoker creates a
