Exoplanets are earth-like planets that are outside the solar system. They
can vary based on atmosphere and appearance like anything that comes up
in your mind it already exists in our galaxy or another galaxy or far far
away. In order to find an exoplanets, it takes a while because they are
difficult to detect because they have a very low luminosity and they can
be close or far. They are detected using radial velocity and Transition
method.
Radial velocity method is a method where astrophysicists will keep a
telescope focused on an object and if it detects a wobble and movement
from the object then it’s classified as an exoplanet.
Transition method is another method where astrophysicists will look into
a star and detect if there is anything orbiting around it, the exoplanets
can be seen as a dark dot orbiting.
In exams, question about exoplanets can be asked like “name the two
methods used to find exoplanets” or a 9 mark question where you have to
explain exoplanet works” also you need to know about Rogue planets. Rogue
planets are basically exoplanets however, you cannot live inside because
of the conditions being deadly, and before even reaching an exo or rogue
planet, you are already dead in your spacecraft. Of course there are
Rogue Gas giants, but that’s not relevant to A-levels.
