Week 2 Discussion Question: What is the relationship
between identity and security in international relations?

The relationship between identity and security within the sphere of
international relations is complex but ultimately intertwined. The neo-
realist ideology that has persisted within recent international affairs has
suggested that all states are individual and sovereign (Booth, 1991). This
concept suggests each state has an identity, be it cultural, social or
political, that needs protecting. However, when analysing the relationship
between identity and security within China, this case becomes somewhat
misconstrued.

China’s exponential growth began during the rise of Communism, where
many regions of the world shared a similar political institution from the
USSR to West Africa and the Caribbean. This shared identity generated a
sense of community amongst communist states who supported each other
throughout much of the Cold War, offering some security. However, this
neglects the concept that states are entirely individual as suggested
within neoliberal theory, instead supporting classic liberalism whereby
some values are universal while other powers must remain in practice.

A lean towards classic liberalism explains what happened to China in the
sphere of international relations when communist societies around the
world began to collapse and convert to democratic, capitalist institutions.
A growing sense of isolationism within a global capitalist world resulted in
China’s market liberalisation and acceptance of some capitalist systems
within the country. Nonetheless, China has stringently maintained its
identity forcefully on the international stage. This has been observed from
its increasing military presence worldwide to its assertion over the South
China Sea and territorial disagreements amongst a multitude of its
neighbours.
