 In early communication networks, each telephone line (circuit) is physically connected
(switched) to another for the duration of the call.


 Back then, this switching was done by human operators physically putting in plugs to connect
lines together.


 Later on automatic switching used electromechanical switches controlled by the number
dialled and then solid state electronics, but the end result was the same - a physical dedicated
electrical circuit between the two endpoints for the entire duration of the call.
