Week 3 My Learning Journal: Learning How to Learn
Where are you currently strong, and what skills and attitudes do you still need to improve?
After reading Chapter 3 of Orientating Adults to Learning in Graduate Theological Education, I
have gained a deepter understanding on how to improve my learning skills for more productive, life-
long learning experiences, particularly with Biblical and Christian studies. My focus and my goal is
to grow in understanding the Scriptures so that I may be a stronger Christian witness for others. I
have typically considered myself an above average student, with very good learning skills. However,
there is always room for improvement no matter how well-developed a particular skill may be. I have
assessed my learning skills as listed below:
Reading Skills – being a graduate student, I can readily read, analyze and comprehend most things I
have read. I truly enjoy reading the Bible. However, there are times when I do not understand a
particular passage I am reading. Expanding my vocabulary would greatly improve my Scripture
reading skills, particulary from the old language. It is not possible to be too proficient with reading,
particularly when we are trying to comprehend what God is telling us.
Writing Skills - I could also use improvement with grammar, as it pertains to Bible study. In
particular, it would relate to conjunctions, such as the words “for.” “and,” “ but,” “ that,” “while,”
and “when.” Obviously, there are more, but the general idea is that these words are critical in
bringing out the arguments that the writers of God’s Word used, and these words help to better
interpret what the Holy Spirit told them.
