Classical Theory - Emile Durkheim - The Societal Causes of Suicide
SOC 205: Social Theory
I chose to discuss suicide rates being higher in the spring in most countries. I found this
fact interesting because of how beautiful it is during spring. According to an article written by

suicides rates go up and it is the most highest during those periods of time (2019, May 8). These
numbers are said to be two to three times higher than in December when suicides rates are the
lowest. In 2017, suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Kaplin states
that more than 47,000 people took their own lives (2019, May 8). Kaplin has mentored about 300

“Mood 24/7.” It is an automated texting service that asks patients how they’re feeling once a day.
The app averages around 15,000 users. Kaplin is able to use the app to see how people are doing

year.
Seasonal allergies which usually occur in the spring, put a large number of people at a higher risk
for depression. Sandra Lin, an otolaryngologist who specializes in allergies, discovered that
depression is higher in people who have rhinitis. The symptoms of rhinitis include a stuffy nose,
