ENG 225: Introduction to Film

Final Film Critique: The Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street isa drama film based off a book written by the main character of

the film, Jordan Belfort. Screenplay written by Terence Winter and directed by Martin Scorsese,

grossed at a total of 392 million dollars in 2013 which made it Scorsese’s highest-grossing film

around the world. The most well-known actors in the film are the legendary Leonardo DiCaprio,

Margot Robbie, and Jonah Hill. As most movie-goers know, Mr. DiCaprio always brings it home

in the films he stars in, such as Titanic (1997) and The Great Gatsby (2013), so that was a great

choice as the lead role considering it would be the best way to bring the character of Jordan

Belfort to life. Throughout this paper, I will be analyzing the film The Wolf of Wall Street

through the lens of genre theory. Genre theory allows one to critique a film through the narrative,

characters, and filming techniques. Considering that the film of choice is drama, the drama genre

theory relies on emotion and relating to the characters and real life situations, which will be

mentioned in this paper.

The Wolf of Wall Street is a film about two men who enter business together in the form

of a brokerage firm, Stratton Oakmont, that builds success, and attention from the federal

government. The two main characters are Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Donnie Azoff

(Jonah Hill), they are so proud of the recognition and success they have achieved, most

importantly the money, so they throw the biggest and best parties for the staff to celebrate, which

includes drug and alcohol abuse. But the FBI is paying close attention to this company and

catches on to the schemes that are in play in order to keep the flow of money growing. This leads

, to Belfort to create a way to keep the cash hidden but still able to access and increase, in a

European bank.

A main point of genre theory through the drama lens is character choice. Leonardo

DiCaprio is a well-known actor for his roles in Titanic, The Great Gatsby, Once Upon a Time

in Hollywood, and many more. He has a variety of film genre’s that he is casted in, but he has

experience in dramas. Some actors are casted as a way of also bringing attention to the film and

getting more viewers to watch. “The economic impact of stardom is sometimes lost in the

People magazine style of coverage. There is a reason that stars with the stature of Will Smith or

George Clooney are paid tens of millions of dollars to make a movie: They can “open” a film, or

bring a large audience to it for the all-important first weekend and guarantee future video sales”

(Goodykoontz, 2019). I think that Mr. DiCaprio is one of these kinds of stars, because I am

interested in films that have actors that I know are very good at bringing the characters' lives to

the big screen, and he is one of them.

Another element, also known as mise-en-scène, is the costuming. “When we analyze

mise-en-scène, we must also consider how costuming is used to create character. We must

consider what of dress best suits the time and place in which the film is set in a western or period

drama,

we expect to see the clothing and makeup of the period and how each character is costumed so as

to stand out from others or to blend in. But it’s not just the costume that transforms an actor into

character; it’s also the acting itself” (Goodykoontz, 2019). In the film, the actors are wearing

suits, all white golfing outfits with a sweater tied around the neck, and the women are dressed in

expensive clothes, jewelry, and shoes in order to display the rich, luxurious lifestyle that was

gained through the brokerage company.

The final element of drama genre theory that will be discussed is the narrative. In the beginning,

the film was summarized about two men creating a brokerage company, Stratton Oakmont, who
