Introduction
Biodiversity is crucial to the growth and success of an ecosystem. According to Bensel and Carbone (2020)
biodiversity is the variety of life and organisms in a specific ecosystem (sec. 1.3 para. 3). The following lab
will test a variety of approaches to enhance the longleaf savanna pine ecosystem I inherited while observing the
endangered species, and both native and non-native species. Throughout the various tests, we will identify the
best approach for increasing species biodiversity in the ecosystem. “Less visible—but equally important—are
the myriad of soil organisms, pollinators, and natural enemies of pests and diseases that provide essential
regulating services that support agricultural production” (Jarvis, Padoch, and Cooper 2007 ch.1 para. 1). My
goal is to identify the best path forward to all of the organisms to thrive.
Hypotheses paragraph: There seem to be no endangered species present. I will reintroduce the gopher tortoise,
while adding longleaf milkweed which will attract the monarch butterfly. Each of these additions will support
the ecosystem habitat differently bringing in endangered species and native life. I will add prescribed burns for
habitat regeneration. While I had three attempts to make changes, my first hypothesis was most accurate.
MaterialsandMethods
At first I chose to introduce gopher tortoises into the ecosystem since they help to burrow and make homes for
other species. Now that I have reintroduced species into the forest, now I need to come up with the best
strategy moving forward to thrive. A prescribed burn will be crucial to the longleaf pine savanna, and will help
the species and ecosystems to maintain health to thrive.
