When you hear the name Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. many people think of the "I Have a
Dream" speech, but do you really know the extent of his accomplishments and inspirations?
According to The King Center, "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s leadership of the modern American
Civil Rights Movement, from December 1955 until April 4th, 1968, African Americans achieved
more genuine progress toward racial equality in America than the previous 350 years had
produced." Dr. King was regarded as America's most pre-eminent advocate leading a non-violent
movement fighting for putting an end to inequality. An assessment of Dr. King's leadership style
reveals a transformational leadership style to be admired to this day. The impact Dr. King had on
society will never be forgotten. Throughout this paper, I will explore the accomplishments and
leadership styles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Some of Dr. King's most significant achievements took place through a non-violent
movement up until his assassination on April 4th, 1968. King was at the time the youngest
person to win the Nobel Peace Prize at only 35 years old in 1964. Many believe that the March
on Washington which drew in over a quarter of a million people in 1963, was the foundation for
the passing of the civil rights act. According to the King Center, "The legislation made it illegal
to discriminate against blacks or other minorities in hiring, public accommodations, education or
transportation, areas which at the time were still very segregated in many places" (para. 9). Soon
to follow, a year later, the Voting Rights Act was passed which allowed African-Americans to
