Cahn and Abigail (2014), define conflict communication as “a process of exchanging
verbal and nonverbal messages in a conflict situation that starts with antecedents, moves
through steps, and ends with consequences” (sec 1.3, para, 14). There are five stages in a
successful conflict resolution. The Prelude is the back story of all involved, and important
information leading up to the Trigger event stage. The trigger event is the cause of the conflict.
It’s the main reason the party has an issue. This could be something someone said or did or did
not do. This then initiates the conflict. This stage is known as the initiation stage. This is where
people start voicing their concerns. This goes on into the differentiation stage which is merely
more conversing over the problem at hand, which leads, hopefully, into the resolution stage.
This is where everyone wants to end up if they are ever in a conflict. This means that all parties
involved are happy with the outcome. The following conflict was a personal experience I had
while running a board meeting for a sports organization. As stated by Dove (1998). “conflict
can push organizations to higher levels of achievement and quality or it can suppress growth
and foster frustration” (p.1, para. 1).
Prelude: Ranger Youth Sports Association is our small town’s organization put together five
years ago in hopes to get our youth to become more active in sports. The board of RYSA
consists of the President, which is me, Vice President Stephanie, Treasurer Kristen,
Commissioner Andrew and Secretary Christina who happens to be last years board President,
one of our girls youth softball coaches, and Stephanie’s twin sister. Stephanie, Christina, and I
are close friends and have been for about three years now. Stephanie and I coach the Lil
Bulldog Cheer Squad and run the Spirit table at all Highschool football home games. Kristen
