Gender Equality
Gender equality has been a main topic in the professional workplace for years. There is
research that shows men get paid more by 20 cents and are treated better by colleagues and man-
agement than women. I wholeheartedly believe that there is not one specific gender that is better
than any other. I as the emergency manager (EM) will enforce my team to treat everyone equally
no matter what gender they choose to go by. I will pay close attention during the hiring process
to make sure that gender is not a factor, but instead, the skills and abilities of the applicant are fo-
cused on.
Gender Equality Practices
There are a few things that come to mind when talking about wanted and unwanted prac-
tices for gender equality within the workplace. There are more men in management positions at
hospitals than women. If we were to remove the gender box entirely on the hiring application, it
would have the potential of preventing hiring more of one gender than the others and prevent
management from being overrun by men. Pay is another area that is unequal between genders.
Having a public salary pay scale would prevent this from happening. If everyone within the hos-
pital knew what their role should be paid based on their experience and title, there could be no
inequality in pay. Sexual harassment within the workplace happens more often to women than
men. If we implemented annual sexual harassment training and seminars it would promote
healthier relationships between colleagues and give women a place to discuss their frustrations.
