Working as a civil engineer in the United States Army (US Army), you undergo
multiples training both out on the field and in classrooms. I can recall I had a classroom training
during the early stage of corona in the US last year where the training did not suit my learning
style. I attended a weeklong course in Water Engineering Management (WEM) and the
instructor read through the entire training course from a direct google link reading out word for
word the whole training process. By the end of the second-class day, you could tell exactly what
was coming the following day. Materials provided to us were not properly managed, periodic
quizzes were given directly from the materials as a means of evaluation. Final was administered
at the end that requires a 75% and above to pass the course.
Moreover, the experience I had with this course material was dissimilar and unrelated to
my learning style. The materials put out and the way and format had me struggling to
comprehend the basics and fundamentals, straining me to do extra in order to understand
properly. The process through which I learn surrounds visual, interactive and most of all great
learning kinesthetic exercises. Introducing any form of video or power point presentations that
would’ve better elaborate the course materials, it would had been easier for me to grab the
concepts adequately. Not forgetting group work or participatory activities including real case
study scenario.
