Abstract


The history of cryptography is summarized in this paper in a simplified form. The paper starts

with an introduction that describes cryptography and sets the tone for the rest of the book study.

The Caesar cipher and the Vigenere cipher are discussed in the second section. Following that, a

discussion of ciphers used during World Wars I and II, including Enigma and the Navajo code

talkers, is presented. The paper analyzes how cryptography was used and describes how it grew

within history until the current conditions. The final part investigates ciphers that are

computerized.

Cryptology is a relatively new field of research. While it has been used to conceal hidden

messages for thousands of years, cryptology as a science (and possibly an art) only began about

one hundred years ago. An inscription carved about 1900 BC in the main chamber of the tomb of

the nobleman Khnumhotep II in Egypt was the first recorded evidence of cryptography (in some

form).


In places, the scribe substituted odd hieroglyphic symbols for more common ones. The intention

was not to conceal the message but rather to alter its appearance to appear more dignified.
