When designing a database, especially for databases with critical information it is
important to consider some critical issues that will ensure the security of information in the
database. The first consideration will be on system security policy where we have three
categories namely: Operating system security, User authentication, and database access
management
Operating system security. This is a policy regarding privileges of the administrator to
create, or delete data. This helps to know who did what on what data at what time, and
everyone in the system including the administrators are accountable for their transactions in
the system. User authentication involves the use of passwords that are preset for different
users. Finally, database access management is the control of nodes that access the server. A
trusted party is given the privilege to do the job of user administrator (Silverston & Agnew,
2009).
Data security policy is another consideration. Users are allowed to access certain data in
the system according to the level of privilege they have. Sensitive information is only
accessible to individuals with high-level privilege. If a database has a lot of sensitive data then
the controls are tighter (Basta & Zgola, 2011). Auditing policy is another factor to consider. It
is important for the evaluation of any security breach, and measures are put in place to avert
future cases.
User security policy is also critical in security design for a database as it allows the system
to have a username, password management, and also know roles of users, and the privileges
during access. Finally, password management policy is also a critical consideration. For a
