Pulmonary Function Test
Pulmonary function testing is used to provide a quantifiable measurement of lung function
used for diagnosis, and to evaluate progression or resolution of lung
Lung Volume Definitions
ERV: Expiratory Reserve Volume.
-The maximum volume of air exhaled from end-expiration
IRN: Inspiratory reserve volume
-Maximum volume of air inhaled from end-inspiration
RV: Residual volume
- The volume of air remaining in the lungs after a maximal exhalation
VT: tidal volume
- The volume of air inhaled or exhaled during each respiratory cycle

Lung capacity definitions
FRC: functional residual capacity
-Volume of air in the lungs at resting end expiration
IC: inspiratory capacity
- Maximal volume of air that can be inhaled from the resting expiratory level
TLC: total lung capacity
-Volume of air in the lungs at maximal inflation
-Normal range is 80%-120%
-RV + VC = TLC
VC: vital capacity
- The maximum volume of air exhaled on complete exhalation after full inspiration

Spirometry is the most frequently used measure of lung function.
It measures volume against time and it's a very simple test.
When a pulmonary function test is performed, the technicians are highly trained and follow very
specific criteria.
Part of the criteria for the test is to enter the patient's race, gender, age, weight and height. This
information is loaded into the machine and that data helps to determine the predicted values, which
you see on a result. Therefore, when you're looking at a result, you don't have to have that data.
