An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
As I can see from the title of this coursebook and its sequence, it is not a good choice for
teaching pupils who just started acquiring a new language. The first Unit starts with
teaching continuous verb forms which is not appropriate for beginners, further topics are
going deeper into language learning, so this coursebook is good for advanced students.
In the book difficulty of given materials increases at a comfortable pace. It can challenge
students’ skills and knowledge but at the same time, these tasks are not too difficult to
discourage learners. The first Unit looks solid with plenty of activities and nontrivial topics
to discuss. The theme of globalization and urbanization is never got old and there is
always something to discuss. There are many types of tasks in this Unit, such as
individual exercises, work in pairs and groups which help learners in developing all four
language skills. Along with it, there is a sufficient number of tasks to revise previously
learned knowledge. Although I like the themes picked for listening activities for their
authenticity, I personally would have preferred there to be more listening exercises like
this, along with speaking tasks. On the other side, if we look at how the whole course is
structured, there is a whole separate block to work on the learners' pronunciation with an
abundance of different types of activities.
The whole course's sequence looks like a solid teaching plan with well-structured units.
The book itself has a pleasant design with a diversity of images and photos. As I can learn
from the sequence, topics for the further units are as captivating as for the first unit.
Students will greatly benefit from discussing it.
To make a conclusion, this coursebook has a good design, interesting themes to discuss,
and plenty of types of activities.
If I had an opportunity to work with this coursebook, I would definitely try to do it.
