Discrimination comes in many forms but with the growing population of multiracial

citizens, a new type of discrimination has emerged. Discrimination has a negative impact on the

lives of the people who are discriminated against. For the multiracial person, discrimination is

harmful to their identity and can result in social isolation. As a society becomes more diverse and

there is a greater mixing of the races, the multiracial population grows. Making the distinction

between the two races of the multiracial person can be harmful and lead to unfair stereotypes.

This distinction relates to social work because it is a role of the social worker to work towards

ending discrimination.

Impact of Discrimination on Individuals of Multiracial Backgrounds

In the past, it was illegal for interracial couples to marry and interracial children where

not acknowledge by the U.S. Census (Stetson, 1990). Instead the multi-racial person was forced

to select one race. In recent years, the number of multiracial children has grown. Multiracial

people are discriminated against and are subject to macroaggressions (Jackson et al., 2012).

Society believes the multiracial person should identify with one specific race. The multiracial

distinction is not a new phenomenon in America and has been enforced by law. Historically

multiracial relationships have been rejected by society. This rejection creates social isolation for

the multiracial and forces them to choose one identify or the other.

For the multiracial person, identify is shaped largely by the reflected appraisals or

through how other people view them (Jackson et al., 2012). When the multiracial is viewed in a

negative light, it can have a negative impact on the life and mental health of the multiracial

population. Discrimination against the multiracial person can lead to disparities and heighten the
