Application of Systems Theory to a Case Study

Walden University

Worksheet: Dissecting a Theory and Its Application to a Case Study

Most theories can be dissected and analyzed. All theories will tell you something about their

focus or unit of analysis. A theory will identify its major or key concepts. It will also point to

the definition of the problem and its cause. This then guides how the social worker assesses

and intervenes, because the theory will also articulate the role of the social worker and how

change occurs.

Basic Assumptions of the Theory

Directions: For each section, respond in 2 to 3 sentences to the following prompts. Where

relevant, provide citations to support your claims.

Name of theory

Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory

Name of theorist

Urie Bronfenbrenner

What are the major assumptions of the theory?

, The significant assumptions of Bronfenbrenner’s theory state that a person’s development is

affected by everything in their encompassing environment. Bronfenbrenner further separated an

individual’s environment into five different levels: the microsystem, the mesosystem, the

exosystem, the macrosystem, and the chronosystem (as cited by Psychology Notes HQ, 2019).

What are the theory’s key concepts?

The critical aspects of the theory are every level of a person’s environment has either directly or

indirectly affected the individual, depending on the system. Moreover, the microsystem is the

person’s immediate environment, such as school, daycare, peer groups. The meso is the connection

the person has, such as the connection between the peer group and their immediate family. The

Exo is the indirect environment of the individual such as. The individual may not have a direct

connection with the system, but the system may still affect them somehow. The macro is the largest

group in the individual’s system, such as the social and cultural values that influence the individual.

Lastly, the Chrono is the system that changes over time, influencing the individual’s dynamics such

as family dynamics, income, or social status (as cited by Psychology Notes HQ,

2019).

What is the theory’s focus or unit of analysis?

Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory focuses on the value and context of the child’s

environment. Further, he asserts that as a child develops, the relations within these environments

become more multifaceted. This intricacy can result from the child’s physical and cognitive

structures (as cited in Research Gate, n.d.). What is the theory’s overall explanation for the cause of

problems?

According to the ecological theory, if the relationships in the immediate microsystem break down,

the child will

not have the tools to discover other parts of their environment. Further, the difficulties individuals

and families encounter directly result from the conflict between the workplace and family life, not

between families and schools (Berk, 2000).
