Capstone Project: Literature Review

Introduction
The use of internet and social media is among factors that influences patterns of child and
adolescent behavior. The social cognitive theory suggests that children learn by example and
often copy behaviors and actions that they observe (Glanz, et al., 2015). Research has shown that
violence in the media (television, video games, internet, social media) can increase aggression
and violence among the child and adolescent population. The internet has grown so rampant that
continuous research needs to be completed to understand the cause and effects of violence in the
media on children and adolescent behavior patterns. Young children are more at risk because of
not understanding the difference between fantasy versus reality (Sengonul, 2017). Sengonul
(2017) completed a longitudinal analysis of research studies to examine short term effects of
child and adolescent behavior when viewing violence in media. The results showed that exposing
the youth to violent behaviors in the media increases aggressive behavior. This article discusses
that observational learning and imitating play in a vital factor for acquiring violent behavior
among the younger population. From this study, it is suggested that children learn to physically
and verbally act aggressively from emulating the behaviors in mass media. Sengonul (2017)
proposes that children with repeated exposure to brutality from the media will lead to habitation
of natural emotions and desensitization to violence. The article recommends parental monitoring
and education when their children are exposed to violent media. It also suggests that the media
industry should encourage positive programming. Additionally, it is suggested that schools could
teach children and adolescents about the harmful effects of media and how to maximize
prosocial aspects in the media.
, using online survey to gain opinions from a social network site as an update of views and
reflection of self-awareness to all levels of people.
Douglas and Brad (2012) focus on the six different risk factors for aggressive behavior.
They selected these risk factors based on previous research and theory. The six risk factors
include: hostile attribution bias, prior involvement in a physical fight, prior physical
victimization, participant sex, media violence exposure, and parental involvement in the media.
The goal of their research was not to discover whether media exposure is a significant factor for
violence but to demonstrate how other risk factors can individually or collaboratively associate
with aggression. Douglas and Brad (2012) attempted to validate that media exposure was not
causation for belligerent behavior alone. However, results from their study revealed that
exposure to violence in the media was the highest-rated risk factor for aggressive behavior. The
results also revealed that parental involvement in media exposure was suggested to be a
protective factor against violent behavior. Hummer (2015) starts to examine neurologic imaging
to identify causation for behavioral changes. The newer technology of neuroimaging can begin to
justify how exposure to media violence can affect brain development. Changes in brain
development will alter and affect lifelong decision-making, personality, and behavior. It is
discussed that adults who have experienced more exposure to violent content in the media were
desensitized and correlated with aggressive behaviors. Hummer (2015) claims a limitation to
future studies is that children and adolescents will be harder to obtain imaging because of needed
parental consent, being alone in a testing room, and needing to lay still during the imaging. A
study was conducted to examine the association between media violence exposure and physical
aggression among 10 to 11-year old children (Coker, et al., 2015). The study examined
associations between physical aggression tendencies in children and media violence exposure,
controlling sociodemographic and other variables such as home and community violence. The
